KATANA Zirconia Block (Fig. 1) has hardly any features in common with the zirconia that was so popular in dental laboratories two decades ago and was used as a framework material. In many cases, this innovative zirconia serves as a functionally and aesthetically sensible alternative to high-strength glass-ceramics. Its flexural strength is higher than that of lithium disilicate, its translucency on a level with the low-translucency variant of the ceramic and its surface—if smoothly polished—antagonist-friendly, causing low wear.

Accepted protocols now include two-stage delayed loading, one-stage delayed loading, immediate loading in a healed receptor site, tilted implant placement, immediate loading in fresh extraction sites, partial extraction therapy (PET), socket shield technique and root membrane concept.

Tooth structure preservation is the best way to avoid more invasive therapies. In young patients especially, more conservative techniques should be applied. Bonded porcelain veneers and even more so direct composite restorations are two therapeutic procedures that require the sacrifice of less dental tissue, finalised to the optimal recovery of aesthetic and functional outcome. Although the two techniques employ different methods and materials, it is possible to achieve correct integration of both techniques by certain technical and procedural measures.

When I first heard about clear aligners in the early 2000s (the US Food and Drug Administration approved the use of clear aligners to straighten teeth in 1980), it must have sounded like science fiction. The fact that it was created in Silicon Valley by people who had nothing to do with the dental industry, in seeking solutions that do not require complicated appliances in the mouth, is really an incredible story.

This was a challenging case with the combined issues of a failed root canal therapy and an iatrogenic perforation of the floor of the pulp chamber. Though initially the prognosis could not be evaluated effectively simply because of non-availability of peer-reviewed literature of similar cases for citation, but the case was taken on owing to the patient’s desire to salvage the natural tooth. The importance of magnification and the ergonomic use of the dental operating microscope cannot be more clearly demonstrated than in this case.

The lasting success of any root canal therapy is always only apparent after long-term observation. In this article, based on a case study, the author demonstrates how a strongly curved canal in the posterior maxilla was prepared using pre-bendable nickel-titanium (NiTi) files, ensuring that a bacteria-proof seal is created that can last for as long as six years after the procedure. Here, the use of a reduced file sequence is just as important as the advantages of a flowable obturation material.

In our clinical practices, dentine hypersensitivity (DH) has always been a challenge. Our best approach was to suggest at-home solutions such as sensitivity toothpaste or mouthrinse, but often there was no significant relief experienced by our patients. Last year, we met Richard Whatley, CEO of BioMin Technologies, who gave us some samples of BioMin F toothpaste for provision of relief from DH, and he explained the technology behind the effectiveness of this novel bioactive glass-based toothpaste. The bioglass particles contained in BioMin F toothpaste adhere to dental hard tissue and then slowly dissolve in saliva to release calcium, phosphate and fluoride ions, which precipitate on nucleation sites as fluorapatite crystals to occlude open dentinal tubules.
